CHURCH HISTORY
It was a much different world when on May 9, 1840 Mississippi Baptist church was organized. The United States had only twenty-six states and it would still be more than twenty years before Abraham Lincoln would become president, or the Civil War would begin. Western Kentucky was being settled, trees were being cut by hand to make room for farming, but people took time to remember the Lord. So on May 1, 1840 a group including twenty-one charter members with representatives from neighboring churches met in Hoppers schoolhouse to organize Mississippi Baptist Church. Some of the stories from the past are humorous and some can be seen only as a work of God. We are told that some children would carry their shoes nearly all the way to church and then sit on a log and put them on to save wear and tear on them. However, the thing imprinted in the minds of the older generation that touches them the most was the great revivals, which they called “protracted meetings.” These would last two weeks or more. Over the years these meetings resulted in many coming to know and trust Jesus as their personal Lord and Savior. Many of those attending Mississippi Baptist Church today are descendants of those saved in revivals of the past. Mississippi Baptist Church still recognizes its responsibility to the community. In 1997 a bus was purchased to better serve the members and assist people in getting to church. We have a growing children’s and youth ministry and as Southern Baptist we are active in the West Kentucky Baptist Association. Supporting missions has always been a leading priority for the church and in the last several years, we have sent members on mission trips both in the United Sates and abroad. We have a willing membership that is looking forward to finding new ways to serve our Lord and those around us.
